You can put a soundbar on the ceiling, but it must be a ceiling soundbar. If you don’t know, there are a lot of ceiling soundbars on the market but remember that they are expensive and difficult to install.

In my experience, soundbars should not be mounted on the ceiling as that is not an optimal position for premium sound quality for most soundbars.

The purpose of this article is to tell you why you should and shouldn’t put a sound bar on the ceiling and what is the best position.

Let’s get started!

Can You Put a Soundbar on the Ceiling?

If you have a ceiling soundbar, the most appropriate location to installing it is the ceiling. On the other hand, if you have a wall-mountable soundbar, it should be installed on the wall.

There are many reasons behind this, but the most prominent reasons are given below:

  • Every soundbar has its own installing instructions
  • Not every soundbar has same mounting system
  • Wall mountable soundbars have short wires
  • Not every soundbar has same sound output direction

Every soundbar has its own installing instructions

When you purchase a soundbar, you will find that there are features that describe the type of installation that can be done with it, such as it can be mounted on the wall, can be placed in front of a TV, put it on a table, or you can install it on the ceiling, etc.

So, the first thing you should do is check what the instructions are for your soundbar. If the instructions say to put it in front of the TV or under the TV, it means that this is the best place for it to provide the best sound quality.

Not every soundbar has same mounting system

In the ceiling soundbars, you will notice that the sound will be projected down because the soundbar is installed tilted. In this way, you will be able to enjoy a good sound quality.

On the other hand, a mountable wall soundbar is mainly directed towards the front to provide you with the best sound quality.

Therefore, if you want to put a ceiling soundbar in front of you, it will be difficult because of the mounting system and vice versa.

Wall-Mountable soundbars have short wires

Mostly ceiling soundbars come with long wires compared to wall mountable and table soundbars. The reason behind this is that usually, the ceiling is at a significant height.

On the other hand, wall mountable soundbars can be placed near the TV because of standard lengthy wires.

Therefore, if you want to avoid wires anywhere in the case of a ceiling soundbar, you should put a ceiling soundbar on the ceiling. And in the case of the wall-mountable soundbar, wires will not be long enough in most cases.

Not every soundbar has same sound output direction

Sound projection is a significant factor while installing the soundbar. If a soundbar emits sound from the front and is a stereo sound system, it should be placed in front of you. Also, when listening to the sound, the left speaker should be on your left side, and the right speaker should be on the right side to have a stereo sound in your ears.

If a soundbar emits sound from all sides, it should be placed in the middle of the room on the table of something else. Also, there should be no distraction.

I suggest that If the TV launch is full of distractions like table chairs and other things in the middle, you should avoid this type of soundbars.

What is the best place to mount a soundbar?

If a soundbar is wall-mountable, the best place to install that soundbar is at eye level. Why am I not saying to mount above or below the TV? Well, it is simple, you may already have placed or mounted the TV height or low, so no matter where your TV is placed or mounted, the soundbar should be at eye level to get the best sound quality.

On the other hand, if there are no mounting options, place it in front of the TV.

If a soundbar outputs the sound from all sides, it should be placed in the middle of the room for optimal sound quality. Obviously, it will be a portable soundbar.

Last but not least, if a soundbar outputs the sound from the upper side, it means it requires reflection from the ceiling. So, it also should be placed in the middle of the room to get the best surround sound.

How to install a soundbar on the ceiling?

From the above discussion, you will already have an idea that you can put a wall-mountable soundbar on the ceiling if the wires are appropriately lengthy, the output direction is towards the front, and the mounting system allows for it.

Even if the mounting system is not allowing for ceiling mounting, you can install a soundbar on the ceiling. You just have to buy a third-party mounting system that is designed in a way that allows for a tilt towards down.

Now it is just a matter of minutes to mount the soundbar on the ceiling.

However, keep in mind that position matters when installing a soundbar on the ceiling. You cannot put it behind you and left or right. It should be right above the TV and tilt towards you.

Can you put a ceiling soundbar on the wall?

Yes, you can put a ceiling soundbar on the wall but remember, it should be right in front of your eyes like a wall-mountable soundbar. However, if the soundbar’s size is big, it is good to go with ceiling mounting because it will look annoying above or below the TV.

Can I hide my soundbar behind my TV?

Obviously, this is possible, but it would not be ideal. It is important to remember that when you place a soundbar behind a TV, it will obstruct the sound waves, reducing the quality of the sound. A soundbar works best when placed just above or below your TV, with nothing directly in front of it. For optimal sound quality, a height of 4 to 6 feet is ideal.

Final Thoughts

Putting a soundbar on the ceiling is possible, but there can be a lot of problems if you are going to mount a wall-mountable soundbar on the ceiling. You must buy an appropriate third-party mounting system that tilts down, and the wires should be long enough. Also, the soundbar’s output direction should be towards the front. Therefore, it is way best to mount a wall-mountable soundbar on the wall and a ceiling soundbar on the ceiling. All the soundbars have their appropriate recommended mounting systems.
